Youth are at a high risk of being victimized by a
criminal offence. It is important for us to consider effective strategies that
will help to reduce the likelihood of our youth becoming victimized by crime. I
believe that by implementing appropriate social, educational, and political
strategies, it will help to navigate the reduction of youth victimization that
we so desperately need.

One factor that contributes to youth victimization is
their home environment. I feel that we need to ensure our youth are living in
safe and supportive home environments. To be able to do this, we need to
increase the magnitude of the parents and caregivers to raise nonviolent youth.
If the caregivers in the family have substance use/abuse problems, we need to
ensure that they are receiving the appropriate treatment and services to help
them become (and stay) sober, positive role models. Families who have a history
of violence, need to be supported and pointed in the right direction so they
can receive the appropriate counselling and treatment to help them learn healthier
ways to cope with frustrating situations. Another factor that may be somewhat overlooked,
is the link between violence in the media, and being able to restrict that
exposure. Another aspect that I believe would contribute to a positive home
environment, is if the family members were directly involved within their

As most children go to school, my second strategy would
be to ensure that the school environment is healthy and inclusive to all. All
schools should implement some sort of violence prevention program (that has
been proven to be effective). Schools could also benefit by having programs and
services available for those students who present with different risk factors
for violence. There should also be readily available access to different types
of mental health services within the school. These services could include help with
trauma, loss, substance use/abuse, bullying, as well as abuse. Another
component to my strategy would be to focus on the school environment, by ensuring
that everyone understands the importance of inclusion, and that the school is
able to provide a sense of belonging that everyone strives to feel.

My third strategy
would be to work with politicians to address social conditions, and to improve
system practices related to violence. It is of the upmost importance that every
family has their basic needs met. These basic needs include income, adequate
housing, food, and access to appropriate childcare. Another component of my
strategy would be to ensure that those who respond to violence, are trained
properly, and have the proper resources to be able to refer individuals to appropriate
programs and services. We also need to promote the importance and significance
of cultural respect, inclusivity, as well as competency. Lastly, we need to be
able to ensure that there are safe housing and neighborhoods for youth. If some
youth are not able to live at home, it is also important that we are able to provide
housing and care for those youths who need it.

As a result of
youth being at a greater risk of criminal victimization, it is important that
we have strategies in place to help reduce the likelihood of youth
victimization. The strategies I have deemed to be most important from my
perspective, involve social, educational, and political focus. Our youth need
to feel safe and supported in their own homes, at school, and have access to adequate
services and programs that may help to reduce the effects of being victimized.
In addition, parents who are having difficulties in their own lives, can end up
displacing those feelings and emotions onto their children in different ways.
We need to make it a priority to ensure that our youths caregivers are being
given the proper tools, resources, and help, to ensure their own mental,
physical, and emotional well-being, so they can properly care for their
