The National Aboriginal Community Controlled Health
Organisation (NACCHO) is a very active organization in Australia to serve
Aboriginal communities. NACCHO is also the national representative of 143
Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHSs) in Australia. In
1996-97, Government sponsored NACCHO to enhance its capacity to involve
Aboriginal people by establishing a secretariat in Canberra and NACCHO played
significant role in national health policy development of Australia. Initially
an Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service was a basic health care
service started and run by the local Aboriginal community to deliver complete,
holistic, and socially suitable health care facility and it was controlled by a
locally nominated Panel of Management. Now NACCHO is operating 143 ACCHSs in
Australia and they are providing a wide range to small range of services
without any medical doctors because they rely on Trained Aboriginal health
workers to deliver the basic care services to local community, often they focus
on prevention and basic health education to local community. Local Aboriginal
community control is very important in and it allows to local Aboriginal
community to control own their own and design a set of protocols and procedures
to deal local community efficiently. In Australia, Local Aboriginal communities
control are governed by NACCHO to make sure that Aboriginal people are getting
greater access to effective health care. NACCHO likewise gives a synchronized
reaction and requirements to nearby group based ways to deal with enhance the
fundamental wellbeing and social prosperity of groups through ACCHSs. A part of
the concentrations which are dominatingly connected with by NACCHO: “Promoting,
developing and expanding the provision of health and wellbeing services through
local ACCHSs; Liaison with organisations and governments within both the
Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal community on health and wellbeing policy and
planning issues; Representation and advocacy relating to health service
delivery, health information, research, public health, health financing and
health programs; and Fostering cooperative partnerships and working
relationships with agencies that respect Aboriginal community control and
holistic concepts of health and well-being.” NACCHO inaugurated Social and Emotional
Wellbeing Workforce Support Unit (WSU) Forum in Melbourne. In which some of the
Social and Emotional Regional Centres that have previously provided support to
“Bringing Them Home” and “Link Up workers”. These organisations are now in the
process of becoming Workforce Support Units. The training aspect of this
measure is being implemented through identified Registered Training
Organisations. The workforce support units of NACCHO have the following roles:
1. Co-ordinating a national network to provide professional support to SEWB
workers; 2. Ensuring adherence to operational standards: staff supervision,
qualifications and mentoring; 3. Supporting best practice service delivery; 4.
Co-ordinating delivery of nationally recognised qualifications; and 5.
Promoting ongoing training and continuing education. NACCHO has concerns
regarding who will co-ordinate the network nationally and what authority they
will have over individuals and or services
