In hours at the supermarket…” This quote shows

In the literary piece, “Checkouts” by Cynthia Rylant, two teens are attracted to one another during a chance meeting at the grocery store. Both use their hope of seeing the other as a means to “escape” the undesirable situations in their lives. The girl’s attraction to the bag boy helps her “escape” her pain from moving and leaving her childhood. The boy’s attraction to the girl helps him “escape” his boring life as a bag boy. The bag boy and the girl use their attraction to each other as a distraction from their own lifes which eventually leads to them moving on.Before meeting the bag boy, the girl’s life was boring and hopeless because she had to leave her childhood home and move to a new town. She finally leaves her new house and goes to the grocery store. The girl meets a boy and uses him as an breakfree from her sad life. In the text it states, “The anticipation of meeting the bag boy eased the girl’s painful transition into her new and jarring life in Cincinnati. It provided for her an anchor amid all that was impersonal and unfamiliar…” This quote shows that the girl used the boy to breakfree from her life. In the beginning of the story, the girl was depressed because she misses her childhood home and friends. The boy helped the girl “escape” forget about being depressed and helped her move on.Before meeting the girl, the boy’s life was boring because he has a job as a bag boy. The boy meets a girl and uses the thought of her to avoid his boring life. In the text it states, “And each hour he worked, the bag boy kept one eye on the door, watching for the red-haired girl with the big orange bow.” This quote shows that the bag boy uses the girl as an “escape” from his life. Being he’s a bag boy who works long shifts, that are tedious and boring. In the text it states, “And for the boy, the long often tedious hours at the supermarket…” This quote shows that even though they only met once but never exchanged words, it was enough to distract the boy from his tedious job. The bag boy and the girl used each other as an “escape”, from their own problems. By the end of the story they both realize that neither of them actually liked each other and they were only using each other as a distraction. In the text it states, “It is odd how we sometimes deny ourselves the very pleasure we have longed for and which is finally within our reach.” This quote shows that they both were only using each other as a distraction. The boy leaves his job as a bag boy and gets a new job at a bookstore. The girl found herself a different boy and went on a date with him. The boy and girl can now both move on. The bag boy and the girl use their attraction to each other as a distraction from their own lifes which eventually leads to them moving on. Before meeting the bag boy, the girl’s life was boring and hopeless because she had to leave her childhood home and move to a new town. Before meeting the girl, the boy’s life was boring because he has a job as a bag boy. The boy meets a girl and uses the thought of her to avoid  his boring life. The bag boy and the girl used each other as an “escape”, from their own problems. By the end of the story they both realize that neither of them actually liked each other and they were only using each other as a distraction. Infatuation can often be mistaken for love, with leads to misunderstandings. But in this story, the author wants readers to learn that a distraction can help readers move on and “escape” from their lives.
