GMO foods are brought up when talking about crops and foods. Genetically Modified Organisms (GMO) are living organisms which have been genetically modified to avoid pesticides and crop failure. Currently , America is not one of 64 countries labeling Genetically Modified Organisms stated by “Justlabelit.org”. Many companies such as “Monsanto” similarly state that “Genetically Modified Organisms are a way to produce healthier crops”. Though the companies are producing ” healthier crops”, they don’t put interest in labeling whether their food contains GMOs or not. GMOs should not be a subject that isn’t labeled in America. According to the FDA , “Manufacturers often voluntarily provide information on their labels beyond the information required by the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act (the FD&C Act) or FDA regulations”. However, Americans argue that labeling should not be only voluntary by companies. GMOs affect many farmers in negative ways. Since GMO farmers use a herbicide or spray to modify their crops, nearby farmers that are organically growing their crops are affected by the spray. This can make the nearby farmer’s crops react to the herbicide. Crops are also expensive for small or family farmers. According to the data found on farmaid, org, corn seed costs have risen from the price of $23.98 in 1995 to $101.04. This big dent in farmers pocket doesn’t allow much profit from each year. The farmers are not allowed to replant seeds planted from last years crop depending on where they buy seeds from. According to Monsanto when farmers buy seeds, “they sign an agreement that they will not save and replant seeds produced from the seed they buy from us”. Scientific research has shown that the amountMost foods in present day are found to be made with Genetically Modified Organisms. According to nongmoproject.org, “Most packaged foods contain ingredients derived from corn, soy, canola, and sugar beet.” Currently around more than half of the population in the United States prefers to buy organic labeling. This means that there are already foods that have organic labeling. Though there is organic labeling, people argue for the labeling of GMOs. Most people are not informed about what their body is consuming. Normally a person who buys corn doesn’t really check for what they are buying. People will just consume what they are buying because its from a grocery store. Currently, the percentage of corn that is genetically modified on the market is 88 percent. “It’s been estimated that 70 to 80 percent of the food eaten in the United States contain ingredients that have been genetically modified” (Williams).Nongmoproject.org states, “More than 80% of all genetically modified crops grown worldwide have been engineered for herbicide tolerance.” People should be able to know what they are eating.
