Today American women are postponing marriage longer than ever before. The median age of women who marry for the first time is 25.8 years. Men also are marrying later than at any time since 1900, with a median age at first marriage of 27.1 years.  One result of this trend, coupled with the high divorce rate, is that more than one American adult in 10 lives alone.Postponement of marriage has a variety of implications for the family. (This is especially true for men, who have a shorter life expectancy than women.) Postponement of marriage is also correlated with an increase in the proportion of childless couples because many people who marry late choose not to have children for personal or economic reasons or because the risk of birth defects increases with the age of the mother. As a demographic trend, postponement of marriage has a significant effect on the population as a whole. A change of only two years in the median age at first marriage can make a vast difference in the number of married couples in the population in a given year.Postponement of marriage is also due to because men tend to marry women who are younger than themselves; women who postpone marriage become caught in a “marriage squeeze”: The number of women who would like to marry is greater than the number of available
