SefchickGlobal PerspectivesJanuary 12, 2018To what extent are GMOs good for you and theworld? People wonder if GMOs are good for the humanbody and economically for the world. Studies have shown that GMOs have influencedus and negatively affected the world’s economy. What really is the big dealabout GMOs? Why did we decide to alter organisms by enlarging their size? First,GMOs are genetically modified organism that will make anything that a farmerproduces in to a bigger and juicier form that farmers cannot produce. Scientisthad the need to use such genetics to increase our food size because ourpopulation started to increase, and it was starting to get harder to feedeveryone. How come more and more countries are starting to ban the use of GMOsif they help feed the people in the world? The major issues are environmentaland our health. GMOs can really mess up the soil and prevent farmers fromgrowing organic foods again because the GMOs that was inserted into the groundhighly affected the natural process to grow crops. From experience, I never consumedgenetically modified foods or know someone that consumed GMOs.

However, I heardthey can be capricious to animals, plants, and our soil. For the plants GMOscan increase the chances for cancer by consumption. Therefore, they alsopollute the environment because of all the chemicals that are used to growGMOs, not only does it pollute the environment but in fact they also depletethe soil and the minerals that are inside of the soil.

For instance, once a GMOis planted, that area and some parts around it becomes toxic and it is verythreatening to other living organisms such as animals, humans and insects.            Genetically modified foods benefit farmersbecause they reduce the need of pesticides and herbicides. Making the plantsable to grow without disruption or disturbance by any other organism. A UKreport states, “Crop biotechnology has reduced pesticide spraying by 503million kg of pesticide active ingredient applied to arable crops in the EU 27for nearly two crop years. As a result, this has decreased the environmentimpact associated with herbicide and insecticide use on the area planted tobiotech crop by 18.

7%.” This is a strength for farmers because they can havemore crops to produce crops for consumers and it will help small farmers thatmight be struggling or in debt. Reducing pesticides and herbicides can allowall farmers extra money in their pockets for other needs. Farmers are usingless and saving more because using genetically modified foods will reduce theinput and GMOs are insect resistance which is a huge benefit, so they will lesslikely see destroyed crops and are able to give more goods to the people. It isa major advantage, according to the source, “18 million farmers globally whoplant GMOs is the ability to successfully grow crops with fewer inputs.” GMOshave reduced pesticide and helped increase crop yields tremendously. This source history is updated and reliable.

The source knows what they aretalking about because it suggests what the future would be like with GMOs. Thepeople who wrote the source have Ph. D’s and are scientist or independentexperts. This source is neutral, it goes both ways. Even though GMOs reduce pesticides andherbicides and increase crop yield, they are harmful to the environment andGMOs can deregulate the way our bodies function. Numerous health problemsincreased after GMOs were introduced.

According to the Academy of EnvironmentalMedicine (AAEM) they urge doctors to prescribe non-GMO diets for all patients. “Thepercentage of Americans with three or more chronic illnesses jumped from 7% to13% in just 9 years, disorders such as reproductive disorders, digestiveproblems.” This weakness affects the way many will think about using GMOs. GMOshave also become long term in the human body. They can leave material behindinside humans and can probably mess up the body function of a human.

However,it is not only humans. Studies shown that animals who have been tested havealso been negatively affected by GMOs. Some animals have organ damage, immunedisorders and other effects that corrupted their body. I also discovered that,DNA inserted into genetically modified foods, can transfer into the DNA ofbacteria living inside us. More toxics can be insecticide produced by GM corn. This was also found in the women and their unborn fetuses.

This source was madeon August 2011. I would confirm this to be somewhat reliable. Some of thethings on this source may be false or true. I can see what position the sourceis on. They believe that GMOs are bad for the world and will negatively affectthe world.

This source is against confidently GMOs.  GMOs help the Earth in a way that humans willnot destroy it. For instance, GMOs reduce greenhouse emissions. Global warmingwould less likely be an issue later. Today, scientist are trying to finddifferent ways to reduce greenhouse gases. This also is a strength for GMOsbecause they require less plowing for the farmers and little to no need for theuse of fossil fuels.

Farmers are able to use less land with GMOs than organiccrops. Another green light for GMOs is that they increase yield so it’s a win, win. Farmers will be able to produce more with less land. Unlike organic crops,GMOs can copy foods and provide more nutrients inside them. Why is this apositive? Well this can increase the production rate to make more food usingless and receiving more. It will also help third world countries in the need. Thereare more ways to grow crops. For example, January 1, 2001 genes fromArabidopsis is put into tomato plants so they are able to grow in salty areas.

Dr.Lemaux states “the nutritional value of GMO foods is tested and comparedagainst non-GMO foods. Numerous studies have shown no nutritional differencesbetween commercially available GMO and non-GMO foods.” I researched that lowlinoleic acid canola oil can reduce its Trans-fat content because of GMOs. Thissource history is updated and reliable. This source knows what they are talkingabout, they should be trusted because most of the experts have some type ofrelations with biotechnology.

This source is more for than against GMOs.  It is good that GMOs use less land to producethe same amount of foods. Unlikely, GMOs can contaminate the soil. GMOspollinate seeds and it can spread to other seeds that mess up the soil. It isnearly impossible to clean up. They pollution from GMOs will outlast theeffects of global warming and the impact will be huge, threatening the healthof future generations. Likewise, GMOs contamination can cause economic lossesfor organic and other non-GMO farmers who struggle to keep their crops pure.

Itsucks how technology has changed the way humans think. There used to be a lotof slogans or sayings of “go green” now some do not hear it as often. It isunnatural to see that humans are destroying what was created for them by using geneticallymodified foods.

It is harming the Earth and is life threatening. Geneticengineering creates dangerous side effects. By mixing the genes from unrelatedspecies can be unpredictable for the future. Creating a GM plant can producenew toxins and nutritional deficiencies. This weakness is probably a reasonwhy, so many countries banned the use of GMOs. These bad effects from a smartidea is way to harmful for humans.

GMO crops can harm birds, insects, amphibians, ecosystems, and soil organisms. They reduce bio-diversity, pollutewater resources, and they are very unsustainable. For example, Genetic modifiedcrops are eliminating habitat for butterflies, whose populations are down toabout or equal to half in the US.

Roundup herbicides has been shown to causedefects in amphibians, embryonic deaths and endocrine disruption, and organdamage in animals even at a very low dose. Genetic modified crops has beenfound growing wild in North Dakota and California, it is expected to pass onits DNA’s on to weeds. This source may be reliable or may not because it wasmade in August 2011. They are against the use of GMOs.

In conclusion, many people banal GMOs but dothey really know what it does. The way genetic modified goods are createddisrupts the DNA of a plant in unnatural ways. They remove a single geneforcibly and insert it into another organism. Even though GMOs were tested tobe safe, I believe that the use of genetically modified crops will destroy thenature of Earth and will eventually ruin life. It is a good idea but there arejust too many side effects that GMOs should not be allowed on farmer’s soil.

Itis not just only humans GMOs affect, they also affect animals and plants. Theyincrease toxicity into the food supply and can be extremely dangerous to livingorganisms. Pesticides and herbicides main objective is to kill unwanted plantsand insects. GMOs have a risk to increased cancer. There are also other healthissues I mentioned earlier such as autism, reproductive disorders, anddigestive problems. By using GMOs, we are putting our children and futuregenerations at risk. Yes, everyone’s research should be needed to explore thisissue further.

Everyone’s idea will not be the same. For example, when somepeople thought that the earth was in the center of the solar system, but thesun is. It took everybody’s research to figure out that the sun is in thecenter of the solar system. If we are going to continue to use GMOs, thenscientists should find ways to prevent most of these side effects. In fact, scientist can find other ways to help make the growth of farmed goods biggerand juicer. I think it is just better to have alternatives in case somethinggoes downhill. There is never an unlimited source unless it is managedproperly.

For example, fresh water. There is only about less than or equal toone percent of fresh drinking water on Earth. In Central Florida, water waspumped down to the drain and Central Florida started to have an increase ofsink holes. In America people use too much gallons of water a day. Our naturalresources will eventually die out and there is no one else to blame butourselves for abusing and not managing them properly.

There will be a scarce infood on day, it just depends on how the society manages this resource.   Word Count: 1795          WorksCited “10 Reasons To Eat GMOs and Feel Grateful For It.” Fitness Reloaded,11 Mar. 2017, fitnessreloaded.
